Notes on Fragmentation and Belonging
Date
2024
Project type
Mixed media paintings and place-based explorations
This series of woven paintings responds to my own embodiment within local urban wild settings, focusing on human-nonhuman conflicts and - within that - the discarded, fragmented and overlooked.
Applying a range of gestural mark making methods and mixed media from foraged and fired willow charcoal and botanical inks to oil and emulsion paints, these works playfully and experimentally explore the process by which various disparate bodies and ways of being can come together in one time and place to form a new whole.
These woven pieces are not just about what they depict but about what they are - a physical manifestation of the process of coming together, of making, unmaking and remaking connections in a world that often feels fractured.
This series of work emerges from my inquiries in relation to themes of dis/belonging within Southampton's urban wilds. The result of numerous layers of multiple transformative, embodied and place-based processes, they have been worked through acts that arbitrarily all function as methods of construction, deconstruction and reconstruction. The final outcome is a meditative reflection on how things (be)come together within a situated threshold.
